Abstract

Background: Myofascial pain is the one which originates from myofascial trigger points in skeletal muscle. The specific treatment should be aimed at finding the aetiology and removing the root of cause and when specific aetiology is difficult to be determined an oral physician should rely on treatment which is less invasive and reversible, like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and therapeutic ultrasound for pain and muscle dysfunction. To determine and compare the therapeutic efficacy of ultrasound and TENS in the management of myofascial pain. Materials and Methods: Study was a prospective and comparative study with randomised collection and division of samples with myofascial pain. Method: 30 patients with Myofascial pain were assigned in to two different groups with 15 each. Group 1 received TENS therapy and Group 2 received therapeutic ultrasound and both groups were evaluated using Visual analogue scale (VAS) scale for pain. Analysis was done using Student’s t- test (paired t‑test and unpaired t‑test) for intragroup and intergroup comparison Results: The results showed a significant reduction in post treatment mean pain score in Therapeutic US( 2.07)than TENS(3.20 )and follow up mean pain score almost similar to the post treatment in Th US(2.33 )while increased in TENS(4.40). Conclusion: Data provides significant reduction in pain by using therapeutic US and TENS and therapeutic US appeared to be the better procedure for pain management in Myofascial pain.
