Abstract

Vitamin B has recently gained a lot of importance in 12
laboratory medicine owing to the magnitude of effects
seen on the homeostasis and normal functioning of the
various organ systems. However the focus remains on
the deficiency or low serum B levels. 12
We discovered an unexpectedly high level of Vitamin B12
in the laboratory at our hospital in a group of patients and
its frequent association with underlying diseases.
A follow up and detailed work up of these group of
patients (after excluding the patients on therapeutic B 12
administration) revealed a significant association with
severe underlying diseases particularly hematologic
and liver diseases.
A statistical analysis of this group of patients was done,
and correlated with the available literature and recent
studies.
